Muscle Activation Technique

Many sport-specific training programs focus on one particular gross motor skill. For example, many "exercise for golf" training systems primarily focus on trunk rotation when, for you, improper ankle motion is inhibiting your swing. The goal of volleyball hitting drills may be to increase shoulder strength, however, a lack of upper back movement may prevent the athlete from properly activating shoulder muscles, leading to overuse injuries. "Sport-specific" training is not body specific; your body may have weakness that will not be addressed by motor pattern drills.

It seems logical that adding weight to a motor pattern, as in swinging a weighted baseball bat or golf club, will increase strength, however, the body does NOT work that way! Athletic skills are as much about timing as power. Adding weight to a motor pattern changes the muscular requirement and recruitment pattern and may have a detrimental effect on this timing. If your body is balanced and strong, efficient timing is easier to achieve.

The Professionals at Science Fitness have the training to assess your motion patterns and precisely identify which muscles are not at optimal function. These "lagging" muscles are the ones holding you back. Conventional training will strengthen muscles which are already strong, increasing compensation and setting the stage for overuse injuries. At Science Fitness we understand the interrelation of all the joints in your body and work to activate the "lagging" muscles to optimize your performance.
